John Crawford retired in 2013 after a 35-year career as a software engineer and computer architect at Intel, advancing to the position of Intel Fellow. Crawford joined Intel in 1977 as a software engineer developing software tools for the Intel 8086 and a number of later processors. He also managed the joint architecture research with Hewlett-Packard that developed the Itanium family architecture.
In 1995, Crawford received the ACM/IEEE Eckert-Mauchly Award for contributions to computer and digital systems architecture and in 1997 received the IEEE Ernst Weber Engineering Leadership Recognition. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2002. Crawford received a BS in computer science from Brown University, and an MS in computer science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He holds 51 patents in the field of computer engineering.
